Training Tips
Like all dogs, each one trains differently. Some can catch on fast, while others don't quite understand.
These training tips work for most Shepherds, but as I stated before, all Shepherds are different.
Training a Shepherd is easy because most are smart. Take a look at the training tips below to see how you can train your Shepherd in a different way.
-
When you train your dog, rewarding good behavior is key. When rewarding your dog, pet them all over and say "Good ____!" Try to stay away from treats. While rewarding Shepherds with treats is effective, the dog may not be able to concentrate on what you are asking him to do.
-
Remember to train consistently! You must train your dog everyday for weeks to months. If you skip a day of training, your dog may forget. Then you would have to start all over again.
-
Clicker Training is another good way to train your dog. While some dogs may get distracted by the clicking noise, it is an effective way to train some dogs.
-
When scolding dogs, you cannot punish them for more than an hour. Most Shepherds know when they have done wrong. Dogs are like little kids. After a while, they don't understand why you are mad at them. When your Shepherd misbehaves. Tell them "No! Bad ____!" Do not hit them, for they are easily heartbroken. Point at what they did wrong (if they got into the trash, had an accident on the floor, etc.) and repeat "Bad ____!" Then make them lie down for a few minutes (no more than 5). Clean up the mess they made, then pretend like nothing ever happened.
-
Remember to give your dog unlimited amounts of love, affection and attention! Shepherds are extremely loyal and they will do whatever they can do please you. If you bond with them, they will behave better and will do whatever you ask them to. Be sure not to get frustrated with Shepherds because it is very easy to! They do misbehave, but they are willing to learn! If you treat them like dirt, they are likely to treat you the same. It is very important that you treat your dog, like a friend. |
