German Shepherd Needs

German Shepherds have "requirements", atleast most Shepherds do. If you cannot provide one of the following, please re-consider getting a German Shepherd. Shepherds are amazing animals with the right people, but if you cannot provide for them, they will not be able to live the life they deserve!

  1. Do you have a fenced yard?

Shepherds need a nice outdoor area where they can walk, run and play! Of course you can get a Shepherd if you live in an apartment, and even if you don't have a fenced yard. But, training a Shepherd is much easier when you have a fenced yard.

2. Are you able to handle large dogs?

Shepherds are large dogs and are very strong. When taking them for a walk, it can be difficult if you are not used to a strong pull on the leash. It is also hard if you are not used to their LOUD bark!

3. Are you financially stable?

Shepherds are expensive, like all dogs. If you do not have the money, please re-think adopting a Shepherd. Dogs need vetcare, medicines, food, water, shelter, toys!!, a collar, a leash, a crate, a prong collar, tags, etc. Do not get a Shepherd if you know you do not have the money right now.

4. Do you have other pets?

If you have other pets make sure they are good with other dogs! And if you get a Shepherd make sure it is good with other dogs and cats! If you have a little dog, watch your Shepherd CONSTANTLY. Some Shepherds are known to bite, scratch, and bark at little dogs.

5. Are you planning on moving?

Do not get any dog if you are about to move! Do not get a dog if you know eventually you will have to dump it at a shelter. It is not fair to the dog. You cannot throw dogs away like garbage, so please don't get any animal if you know you'll have to give it up.

6. Do you know the basics about Shepherds?

Doing research really helps when getting a Shepherd. If you do not know that Shepherds have a "large" voice, or you don't know that they are shedding machines, you should look into the breed more. Shepherds are large dogs that need experienced owners.

7. Do you know their lifespan?

Shepherds live to be 14yrs +. Can you own a dog for this long?

8. Do you understand that Shepherds need exercise?

Shepherd owners need to take their dogs for frequent walks, and for frequent "play time" in the backyard. Dogs that are muscular, healthy and fit live longer lives!

9. Can you keep the dog indoors?

Shepherds love the outdoors, but would love it even more if they could come into your house with you. They are fluffy dogs, but when it gets cold, so do they!

10. Can you provide _____?

Shepherds need love, training, time, attention, food, toys, shelter, etc.! Please make sure you are able to provide these things for any dog.
